Podcasts as Scholarship: Where do libraries come in? (M&M Digital Scholarship Discussion)

Earlier this year, a Duke professor inquired about the possibilities for Duke Libraries to collect and catalog Novel Dialogue, a podcast she co-hosts, and to help secure DOIs for each episode. The request raised a number of questions and surfaced gaps in how digital scholarship is understood and managed. At the same time, the request underscored an expectation: scholarship can be preservable, accessible, and citable, whatever its form, and libraries play a role in ensuring that.

In this Munch & Mull discussion, we’ll walk through the specifics of this request – what was requested and how it was addressed – and then consider the lingering questions and how we might set ourselves up to respond in the future. If you’d like to dig into this topic a bit more ahead of time, we invite you to click through the links below.

Background
Novel Dialogue is a podcast co-hosted by English professors Aarthi Vadde (Duke) and John Plotz (Brandeis) and produced by graduate students. The podcast is sponsored by the Society for Novel Studies, which also sponsors its companion publication, Novel: A Forum on Fiction (published by Duke University Press). Questions arising from this request ranged from the technical (e.g., where can collections of audio files be housed and also receive a DOI for each file?) to the programmatic (e.g., is a podcast a scholarly publication or research data?) to the social (e.g., where are scholars likely to be looking for this scholarship?).
