Evaluating public humanities: New Guidelines from MLA (M&M Digital Scholarship Discussion)

Recognizing the increasing prevalence and importance of public humanities projects, the Modern Language Association has released guidelines to help individuals as well as academic administrators and departments effectively understand how to evaluate these projects. These guidelines are also meant to spark conversation about how such projects can be effectively developed and sustained.

MLA Ad Hoc Committee on Valuing the Public Humanities. (2022 August). Guidelines for Evaluating Publicly Engaged Humanities Scholarship in Language and Literature Programs. New York: Modern Language Associate of America. https://www.mla.org/content/download/187094/3025238/Guidelines-Evaluating-Public-Humanities.pdf

In this Munch & Mull discussion led by Arianne Hartsell-Gundy (Head of Humanities and Social Sciences department and Librarian for Literature), we’ll review key guidance from this report and consider the role libraries and librarians play in this work. How do (or could) we help make this scholarship discoverable and legible? In what ways are we well positioned to evaluate and help sustain public humanities projects? What are existing examples or opportunities at Duke for engaging in this work?
