Open Discussion: Self-Care and Pedagogy (Teaching practices to support student well-being)

While we have seen members of the Duke community embracing flexibility, cooperation and care to support one another during the pandemic, the turbulence of 2020 took an emotional toll upon both students, educators and staff at Duke — to say the least. In our first open discussion focused on teaching practices to support student well-being, we invite the Duke community to explore the relationship between self-care and learning. Our intent is to provide a venue for sharing and learning from each other.

To ground our discussion, we offer two suggested, short readings by Professor Ada Palmer from the University of Chicago: “Healthy Work Habits and Self-Care Guide for the Pandemic Crisis” and “Adapting a Syllabus for the Crisis.”

The Zoom link will be emailed before the event start time.

This session will not be recorded, due to the nature of the “Teaching Practices to Support Student Well-Being” series.

If you have accessibility requests, please contact learninginnovation@duke.edu.

This is part of Learning Innovation’s 2021 Spring Supporting Student Well-Being Series. While faculty generally aren't trained as or expected to be counselors, your teaching plans can be designed to demonstrate increased flexibility, empathy, inclusivity and care for student well-being, and to try to best support student learning. We invite to join us for a series of informal discussion groups, focused on a specific topic each month, to share and learn how we can better support our students:
