Resilient Duke: an ONLINE climate themed reading group
Interested in climate change? Want to think about practical and optimistic actions that you can implement? This group is for you! Resilient Duke is an online space for the Duke community to discuss applying pragmatically optimistic* ideas to address climate change. Join facilitators Faith Haines, Master’s student at UNC School of Information and Library Science, and Jodi Psoter, Librarian for Climate & Sustainability, to talk about how we can reframe climate narratives and bring climate optimism to conversations and solutions.
*The term “pragmatic climate optimism” is attributed to the talk “The Case for Climate Optimism” given by Charlie Sellars at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business on October 8, 2025.

Our discussion will be based on your selections from Not too late: changing the climate story from despair to possibility, a collection of short essays by various authors.
To ensure a lively conversation, some pre-work is suggested. We encourage you to read the book, but understand that may not be possible. Please find book adjacent materials to read, listen, and/or watch (no need to do all!) below.
Pre-work options include any or all:
- Read a couple of essays from Not too Late. Consider one from the section (pages 151-184) titled The Future We Want.
- Watch an interview on Climate One TV with book editor Rebecca Solnit on Why It’s Not Too Late (27 min)
- Listen to The Case for Hope, With Rebecca Solnit on The Science of Happiness Podcast (22 mins)
Whether you read, listen, or watch, come prepared to recommend one big idea that could be accomplished campus-wide and one idea that you could realistically implement for yourself.
A zoom link will be sent via email to registered participants to join the workshop.
