The Janie K. Long Event Series presents: Defending Intellectual Freedom
Join us for a panel on the growing threats to intellectual freedom in higher education—from collection and program challenges to censorship of research, faculty expression, and curriculum. Libraries and universities play a vital role in protecting the right to seek, share, and express ideas, a cornerstone of democracy and academic life.
This year’s Janie K. Long Speaker Series program will explore how we can support students, faculty, staff, and our community in safeguarding these rights. We will also remember Duke alumnus Harry H. Harkins Jr., T’73, a dedicated supporter of LGBTQ+ library collections, scholars, and this series.
Speakers: Robin Koshelev, Duke undergraduate researcher, Dr. Janie K. Long, Duke faculty emerita, Dr. Joseph Salem, University Librarian, Dr. Pete Sigal, Department of History; moderated by author and journalist Steven Petrow.
Reception: 1:30 p.m. in the Janie K. Long Study Space, Perkins Library 4th floor
Sponsored by: Duke University Libraries, David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Duke Department of History, Duke Program for Scholars and Publics
Note: This program is in-person.
