Intro to Power BI: Easy interactive reports

[Online] Power BI is a dynamic data visualization tool from Microsoft that allows you to connect to data sources, structure data models, and create interactive reports. Many analysts choose Power BI for its user-friendly interface, integration with other Microsoft products, and relative affordability. This workshop will cover the basics of how to form data relationships, use simple functions to establish a data model, and build a variety of interactive visuals (e.g., bars, lines, maps, tables, and cards). You'll also learn how to publish, export, and share your reports. This event is open to non-Duke participants.

This workshop is designed for beginners who might be comfortable with data and spreadsheets, but have no experience with Power BI, are curious about what it can do, and want to get a quick introduction so they can start playing on their own.

Expectations:

  • If you're going to play along with the exercises, you'll have an easier time if you have two monitors. (Some people get by with one, but it's harder to watch me perform steps and do them at the same time if you only have one screen.)
  • You will be expected to arrive with Power BI Desktop already installed on the machine you're Zooming from if you want to work along with me or do the exercises during the workshop!
    • Power BI Desktop is free and available to download from the Microsoft store (for Windows only; Mac users see instructions below). Please download, install, and use the desktop app and not the online version.
    • Power BI licenses are not free, but most Duke students, faculty, and staff have a Pro license included with their Microsoft 365 subscription. You can check your license type by visiting powerbi.com, signing in, and clicking your account icon in the upper right corner. If you do not have a Pro or Premium license through Duke, you may choose to try the 60-day free trial.
    • Mac users: Power BI Desktop is only available on Windows machines. Mac users with valid Duke credentials can access Power BI Desktop from a Windows computer on campus or through a remote desktop connection on your own machine. Please fill out this form by 9:00am on Thursday, April 17th if you plan to use a remote connection and we will check out a Virtual Computing Manager (VCM) for you.

A zoom link will be sent via email to registered participants to join the workshop.

The content of the workshop may be recorded. If you are uncomfortable with a recording being published, please contact the instructor at anytime prior to the conclusion of the workshop.
