Getting It Published: Patents: A Quick Overview

Join this workshop for a quick overview of Patents

  • What is a patent?
  • Why are they important? 
  • How can you search for patents? 

By the end of this session, participants will be able to

  • Define the four types of intellectual property
  • Describe multiple types of patents
  • and perform a basic patent search

Patents are used to protect research in both academics and industry.  Attend this workshop to learn the basics. 

Jodi Psoter is the Librarian for Marine Science and the Head, Marine Lab Library at Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort, NC.   She teaches students, faculty, and staff how to make research more effective and the process more efficient using library resources. Jodi has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Virginia Tech and a Masters in Library Science from Southern CT State University.
