Getting It Published: Writing Abstracts and Introductions
In this workshop, we will analyze examples of journal article abstracts and introductions to decipher the “moves” writers must make to present their research effectively. Participants may bring a journal article from a top journal in their field or a journal to which they wish to submit.
Allison McIntyre is a Communications Consultant with Graduate Communications and Intercultural Programs in the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University. She has been part of the GCIP team since 2022, teaching oral and written communication through one-on-one coaching sessions, developing and instructing courses, and facilitating workshops for master’s and PhD students. Allison earned her BA in English Literature at Texas A&M and her TESOL certification from University of Texas at Dallas. She has 25 years of experience working with international communities, including two years serving in the United States Peace Corps in Papua New Guinea. Her time there helped Allison build a foundation and passion for connecting with our global community and a desire for fostering intercultural competency through communication.
Angus Bowers joined Duke University as a Communications Consultant in late 2018. He brings over 11 years of teaching experience to the Graduate Communications and Intercultural Programs. He comes from teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at Wake Technical Community College and from the Intensive English Program at North Carolina State University. In addition, Angus has trained ESL teachers as a faculty member of the ESL Teacher Certificate program at Wake Technical Community College. He received a Monbukagakusho Research Grant from the Japanese Government to complete a master’s degree in Social Anthropology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and has an Master of Arts in English Linguistics from NC State.
