GS715 Grad Student RCR: Citational Justice and Challenging Citation Bias in Scholarly Publishing

Citations are the currency of hiring, promotion, and tenure in most academic disciplines, but there are demonstrated inequities and biases within the practices and rates of citation. Women and people of color are historically underrepresented in academia, and their published work is cited at lower rates than white men. Publications from the global south are generally cited less than those from western nations. In this session, we'll discuss the common biases reflected in citation practices, what efforts are being made to address them, and how graduate students can establish a more equitable and inclusive in citational practice to prepare for their careers.
